Put the CNN retraction in context, please
Dammit. I can see where this CNN retraction of a story concerning a Donald Trump confidant leads. Now, all those who believe mainstream news sources are fake news will pounce.
And you know who pounced first.
The retracted story concerns Anthony Scaramucci, a hedge-fund manger CNN linked to a Russian investment fund. However, in reaction, CNN pulls the story, issues a retraction and fires the three reporters and editors involved in the story.
Isn’t that what trusted news outlets do? When an error is published, they correct the mistake. They don’t just leave it there floating in the Internet wind forever. Like the true shady outlets that claim Obama isn’t an American or that zombies live among us.
“CNN did the right thing. It corrected the record. That should mean it’s MORE trusted. Using that to become completely dismissive of all media results in anarchy. Is that the country you want?”
A Stealing Share colleague, once a reporter, recounts his former newspaper publishing a front-page retraction over a story a state official took a bribe. It wasn’t a good look. But the mistake was corrected and given great play.
The CNN retraction was the RIGHT thing to do
The CNN retraction is a terrible look too. Trump has citizens questioning serious media outlets, like The New York Times and The Washington Post. Both of which are producing some of the most intelligent and insightful reporting in a generation. It’s a strategy to deflect issues surrounding the Trump Administration.
And, sadly, it’s working.
Think about this. It’s smart to have healthy skepticism. But there’s a difference between that and nihilism. When you choose to believe no one, you become ignorant. Buy into a corruption of the Fourth Estate and we’re doomed as a nation.
Thomas Jefferson once said, “Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”
I’m with the Third President of the United States. CNN did the right thing. It corrected the record. That should mean it’s MORE trusted. Using that to become completely dismissive of all media results in anarchy. Is that the country you want?
