How much does a troop actually make from selling Girl Scout cookies?
Did you hear some new Girl Scout cookies come with a feminist message?
The new cookies are called “Lemon-Ups,” and are stamped with a feminist message like, “I am a leader” and “I am a go-getter.” Fine. Maybe not how I would have chosen to encourage and support my girls to build confidence. But I get it.
The price of a box of the Girl Scout cookies will be $5 this year, up from a dollar last year. And this got me thinking. How much of that $5 goes back to the Girl Scout troop? I mean, if you are really interested in encouraging and supporting young cookie entrepreneurs, especially girls, making sure they are financially rewarded for a job well done makes sense.
From last year’s numbers, it turns out the girls receive $0.59 per box of Girl Scout cookies, or 14.75%. Now how does that compare to the Boy Scout’s popcorn program? Well Cub/Boy Scout troops earn about 30% per bag of popcorn they sell.
So, an average bag of Boy Scout Popcorn is $20, and the Pack or Troop earns $6. Therefore, for every bag of popcorn the Boys Scouts sell, Girl Scouts must sell a little over 10 boxes of cookies.
Oh, right, but they do earn Girl Scout cookie patches and pins!

Girl Scout cookies make 15% less for the troop than Boy Scouts earn
Holy shit. How’s that empowering girls? The Girl Scouts have the deck stacked against them from the onset. We hear all the time how women in the workforce don’t make as much as men. For an organization that is supposed to be building up the next generation of women leaders, it seems all it’s doing is promoting the status quo – to be even with the boys, they have to work 10 times as hard. Where is the feminist message in that?
Look, I’m not saying that what the Girl Scouts do isn’t worthwhile. My girls sold Girl Scout cookies. But it’s flat-out wrong to say you are promoting a feminist message and helping girls to be leaders and go-getters when all you are doing is preparing them to work 10 times as hard to make the same amount of money as their male counterparts.
And while I am sure that is not the Girl Scout’s intent, once you get past the adorable little girls asking you to buy a box of cookies, it feels like the girls are being taken advantage of – patches or not. Seems to me if you are really interested in helping the Girl Scouts, you should forgo buying Girl Scout cookies and just give the troop a $5 bill.
That is, unless they only get 15% of that too.
