Arya Stark had every right to get naked
(Game of Thrones spoiler alert! Especially when it comes to the beloved and now all grownup Arya Stark.)
I was as shocked as everyone else this past Sunday while watching the blockbuster, Game of Thrones. This shock did not come when Tormund, the red-headed wildling, professing being breastfed from a giant as a ten year-old for three straight months. (That was just disgusting.) Or when Brienne of Tarth being knighted by Jaime Lannister, (Holding back the tears.) Rather, my ultimate about-face was in watching Arya Stark have “It’s our last night alive” sex with the blacksmith, Gendry.
I, like a lot of people it seems, first reacted with a prudish take on the matter — and I am really no prude, either. What’s more, this had nothing to do with actress, Maisie Williams’ freedoms as a 22-year old. But the facts are these: Arya Stark was the viewer’s little girl. She was a young Stark child when the viewing (and reading) journey commenced eight years ago. And now, here she was slipping out of her clothes and mounting a blacksmith. If there was ever a WTF moment in the series it was this.
But then, I considered the brand of Arya Stark, and damn it, this scene made perfect sense.
Arya Stark represents of change
Consider the character arc of Arya Stark. She began as a young child playing swords and shooting arrows in the North. Arya hovered nearby as her father was beheaded, then took revenge against those who assassinated her mother and brother in the Red Wedding. She struggled to exist with the Hound, learned of non-existence from the Faceless Man, Jane H’ghar. And eventually, returned to the North only to brace for a seemingly un-winnable fight against the White Walkers.
“We have witnessed Arya Stark in all facets of life, and as viewers, observed her growth on screen. This, to me, is just part of the character’s growth.”
We have witnessed Arya Stark in all facets of life, and as viewers, observed her growth on screen. This, to me, is just part of the character’s growth. Unrivaled by the potential birth of a child (perhaps this will be the next step in this unique character journey). And for these reasons, having sex with Gendry makes perfect sense, as strange as it was to see.
