United and US Airways are Proposing a Merger

UnitedIf United Airlines and US Airways negotiate a merger, as reported by the AP today, I hope they have the courage to engage us during the negotiations phase.  Both airlines are in trouble, and the issues facing them are not simply operational. They will not be fixed as a result of economies.usairways_logo

They have real brand problems and it is important that they be fixed before a merger. Deciding as to whose banner flies over the new airline is a strategic issue that should be more concerned with stealing market share than bragging rights.

Of course, considering the recent track record, what do you think the chances are that either United Chairman and CEO Glenn Tilton or US Airways Chairman and CEO Doug Parker will engage us? About as much of a chance as a new entity changing the game.
